Holidays in the Workplace
Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and Happy Kwanzaa! The end-of-the-year holiday season is one that can bring stress for some and celebration for others. For me, it has always been interesting to learn how others celebrate the year's end. Whether they celebrate Christmas or Epiphany, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa. Whether they set up a Christmas tree or a New Year Tree. Whether they exchange gifts or escape it all by going to the movies, most people will share their end-of-the-year traditions when asked.
Here in the States, tradition dictates we reflect and plan for the new year as December nears its end. Part of that is remembering those we hold dear with gifts of good tidings and cheer. This includes those that work with us. Company culture does not begin and end at the entry doors. It is inclusive and changes with those that fill our offices as employees, vendors, and clients. The individuals who exercise their choice to show up every day share a bit of their lives with us as they help build workplace communities.
Create space for teams to be heard and valued by offering casual office get-togethers. One of the ways to do this is to invite your teams to share how they celebrate during this time of the year. Learning about one another’s cultures and holidays we value helps build bonds your team will be able to lean into throughout the year. Voluntary conversations let teams share elements as they are comfortable with those they work with. We are all human beings looking for connection, whether we work by ourselves, remotely, or in an office environment. We are all looking to connect with those we work with and serve. So, ask your employees what they enjoy about December and January, and see if there are ways that you can incorporate their sharing into daily practices to encourage rapport and team building.
